Tata India based leading car maker, has called off its Thailand based Eco car project promoted by the government of the country, claimed some media reports, today. The reports further reported that the company is now planning to launch its small car sensation Tata Nano in Thailand market. The unfavourable excise tax structure, coupled with the large investment requirements forced Tata Motors to abandon its 7-billion-baht project in Thailand, a report by Bangkok post claims.
A Tata Motors spokesman confirmed that, Thailand based unit of Tata Motors confirms that it will not participate in the eco-car project. However, the company will explore opportunities to expand its product portfolio by introducing a relevant passenger car model with appropriate investments for local production in Thailand. The product will be highly fuel-efficient and environment friendly, and will meet the aspirations of the Thai consumers.
Though Tata Motors hasn't confirmed it officially but it is widely speculated that company might consider launching its cheapest and most popular small car Tata Nano in Thailand market. The Nano model is expected to be imported as a CBU (completely built unit) initially, and after analyzing the response from buyers in that market company may plan to establish a manufacturing or assembling facility in Thailand.
