Indian farmer bid 10 Lacs for VIP car number

India is no longer a follower in terms of spending-styles. Recently a farmer-turn-realtor N S Shergill based in Chandigarh spent a whopping amount of Rs. 10 Lacs to own VIP digits in his car number. Jaspal Bhatti, a famous comedian commented that the day is not far when Indians would be seen taking loans for buying fancy car numbers. Although the trend is not new but this one comes as the highest bid till now.

In India Punjabis are famous for their craze in buying such expensive numbers for their cars. These exclusive numbers are called the VIP numbers and cost a huge punch on the pocket.

On Saturday, there was an auction by the Chandigarh's Registration and Licensing Authority for getting the VIP number of CH01-AC-0001. Shergill had bid the highest amount of Rs. 10 Lakh and won the auction. He owns an SUV and wanted to gift a unique number to his car.

Bhatti said that amongst Punjabis small digit number are treated as a status symbol and people don't mind spending some heavy bucks for the same. He also added that number of his own cars have number "1", but said that in earlier days these numbers meant a good approach and contacts with top bureaucrats.

The huge amounts that the government demands for VIP numbers should be open for trading, Bhatti said. As the government is earning huge revenues from this, the owner of the numbers should be allowed to sell the same and trade money for it.

Shergill owns farms in Kharar and Kurali and is also involved in the real estate business. The Punjabi man had already taken a loan of 18 Lakhs for his 20 Lakh SUV. The number as he commented was a wish his wife, a teacher had and he readily fulfilled it. India is spending the way it wants to.
