General Motors to manufacture electric cars independently

General Motors is looking into its plans of manufacturing electric cars. This is not all. GM is going to produce these electric cars on its own. The deal with Reva Electric regarding manufacturing of the car couldn't be finalised even though the two companies had signed an MoU for the same. The reason for this was communicated to the tabloids by GM India that said that it wont produce cars with Reva electric as Mahindra had obtained stake in the latter.

General Motors will introduce Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in hybrid vehicle in the month of December in the American market. It, however negated plans to launch the vehicle in the Indian market since it is a very undeveloped phase for hybrid vehicles. “The country is still not ready for such plug-in hybrid vehicles. The expensive Chevrolet Volt may get few Indian buyers, who are fascinated to drive a green car. It will certainly not be a huge success in a sensitive market such as India,” said Ankush Arora, GM India vice-president (marketing, sales and after sales).

Gm further added that India does not possess the sufficient infrastructure to support for electric cars. This does not mean that India wont see any electric cars in the future. Number of car makers are in talks with the Indian government to establish required infrastructure for commercial viability of electric cars.
